Cleanings & Exams
Regular exams and cleanings are an important part of maintaining optimal oral health. We recommend that patients visit us every six months for a routine cleaning and exam. During your appointment, we will thoroughly clean your teeth and look for any signs of problems. If we find anything, we will work with you to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
Oral Cancer Screenings
Oral cancer screenings are important for detecting and treating cancer early – before the condition is able to progress to more critical stages.
During an oral cancer screening, the mouth is examined for signs of cancer. This includes looking at the lips, tongue, gums, and inside the cheeks. The neck and throat may also be checked. As part of our routine oral cancer screenings, we use ViziLite Plus, which is a device used to detect unusual tissue growth. It works by highlighting abnormal cells within the oral tissue that may be cancerous.
If anything suspicious is found, a biopsy may be recommended to confirm whether or not the findings are malignant.
Fillings
Dental fillings are a type of dental restoration used to repair small to moderate-sized areas of decay in the tooth. At our office, we offer fillings made from composite resin to match the shade of the tooth while also restoring strength and function.
The process for dental fillings is generally quite simple and involves several steps:
- First, we apply a local anesthetic to the area surrounding the tooth to ensure the process is comfortable.
- Once this is complete, the tooth is cleaned and the decay is carefully removed.
- Next, the area is filled with composite resin and shaped to blend with the rest of the tooth.
- Finally, the filling is hardened with a special light and polished to ensure a beautiful, blendable appearance.
TMJ Therapy
TMJ therapy is a type of treatment that is designed to help reduce or eliminate symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). TMD occurs when the jaw joints, also known as the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), become inflamed or irritated. This can lead to a number of symptoms, including pain, clicking or popping sounds when moving the jaw, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth.
TMJ therapy is available in a variety of forms, depending on the specific case or cause of inflammation. These treatments can include things like lifestyle changes, stress management, and oral appliances designed to reduce jaw tension.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of TMD, it is important to visit our office, so we can properly diagnose the condition and develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions are procedures in which a tooth is removed from the mouth through either a simple or surgical procedure.
- Simple extractions are performed by gradually loosening a tooth from its supporting ligaments using forceps. Then, the tooth is carefully removed.
- Surgical extractions are performed on teeth that have not yet emerged from the gum line. With these procedures, the tooth is accessed and removed through a small incision made in the gum tissue.
Our experienced providers are trained to perform these extractions in a way that is comfortable, efficient, and safe for our patients. When it comes to tooth removal, we ensure that the procedure is carried out only if it is beneficial to the patient’s oral health. Dental extraction can be necessary for many reasons. These include when a tooth is:
- Impacted
- Severely decayed
- Broken or fractured
- Crowding other teeth
Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy is a dental procedure that involves removing the pulp (soft tissue inside your tooth) and nerves from a severely decayed or fractured tooth. This is necessary to stop infection from spreading to neighboring teeth or other parts of the body.
After the pulp is removed, the canals of the tooth are cleaned and sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The final step involves placing a dental crown over the tooth to restore its strength and appearance while protecting it from further damage.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom tooth removal is a common dental procedure that many people will undergo at some point in their lives. This surgery involves the removal of one or more of the third molars; these are the last four teeth to develop and are located at each of the back corners of the mouth.
Wisdom teeth often begin to erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. They can cause various problems, including pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, impaction, or crowding of other teeth in the mouth. Symptoms that wisdom teeth need to be removed may include:
- Pain or swelling in the gums near the back of your mouth
- Facial swelling due to infection
- Jaw pain
- Headache
- Difficulty opening your mouth wide
Our team will monitor the development of these teeth through x-rays during every dental examination. However, if you begin to notice any of the above symptoms between appointments, we encourage you to contact our office for an evaluation to determine the need for extraction.
Gum Disease Therapy
Scaling and root planing is a common form of gum disease therapy used to treat gum disease in its advanced stages. This treatment involves the removal of plaque and tartar from your teeth, both above and below the gum line.
Also known as deep cleaning, the goal of scaling and root planing is to reduce inflammation and allow the gum tissue to reattach to the tooth structure.
- During the scaling portion of the procedure, we will use a special tool to remove tartar and thoroughly clean the teeth. We will pay special attention to removing bacterial accumulation from the pockets between the tooth roots and the gum tissue.
- Root planing helps to smooth out the bone tissue and polish any rough areas so that the gum tissue can reattach more easily. This also makes it more difficult for bacteria to accumulate in these same areas in the future.
